The Pharisees

By David Ben-Ariel Who isn’t aware of the sins of the Pharisees? (Especially the Accuser of the Brethren?). But does that mean the truths they teach, even if they don’t live them, are no longer true? It reminds me of James 1:22 encouraging Christians to be doers of the Word and not hearers only; of Ezekiel 33:31 where it shows “God’s People” hearing the Word but not implementing it; and of Romans 2:17-23 where the Jews are proud of knowing God’s Word but miserably fail to put it into perfect practice, although demanding it of others! You could substitute “God’s Church” for Jews and get the same message! How many of us know God’s truth and yet aren’t exactly paragons of virtue? Do our personal failing somehow negate God’s truth? As a general rule, despite ourselves, doesn’t God’s Church still have more truth than any other religion? And Jesus did state that “salvation is of the Jews” (John 4:22). Could this be WHY while Jesus acknowledged (and God’s Church should too!) that the Pharisees are the chosen ones that GOD has ordained to sit in Moses’ seat of authority (to execute judgments and make binding NATIONAL decisions), that He said to follow their teachings but not their bad examples? (Matthew 23:1-3). In other words, Do as they say and not as they do. However, some are so overwhelmed with real and imagined sins of the Pharisees they’re blind to God’s Purpose being worked out through them! We must be extremely careful not to throw the baby out with the bathwater! Paul, like Rabbi Yashua, also recognized that God has chosen the Pharisees out of all the Jewish groups, and called himself a Pharisee “blameless in the law” (Philippians 3:5-6). Paul, under divine inspiration, declared that God has ordained the Jews to preserve “the oracles of God” (Romans 3:1-4). What if the Jews, specifically the Pharisees whom God has chosen, are less than perfect? Does it make God’s purpose for them null and void? Paul answers: “GOD FORBID!” Read and believe Romans 3:1-4. There’s no need for any controversy. The Scriptures are quite clear! What about Jesus’ giving authority to His disciples? There’s no contradiction. They’re to base their CHURCH decisions UPON the foundational NATIONAL LAW that is preserved by the Jewish Pharisees - not apart from them! Otherwise they would be among those who “think to change the times and the seasons.” God’s Church is built upon the Law and the Prophets and isn’t out to overturn or destroy either (Ephesians 2:20). The biblical traditions of the Pharisees continue to this day among the Jews as Rabbinic Judaism. The Sadducees and Samaritans are history! If and whenever the Pharisees or God’s Church would attempt to enforce doctrines contrary to Scripture, then we must obey God and not man. God’s government - as revealed in His Word, His Consitution - takes precedent over any Church or State law. And note well this important fact: Paul wrote that God has given it to the Jews to preserve “the oracles of God” (God’s Word, sacred calendar, holy days) even AFTER Jesus had given authority to His disciples. He didn’t say, “Now God’s Church has seized control of everything!” That’s a Catholic doctrine of demons! As far as the Pharisees go, we should be careful to remember that Paul called himself a Pharisee (Acts 23:6) and would’ve taught the traditions of the Pharisees such as the BIBLICAL dates for Passover and Pentecost (2 Thessalonians 2:15) that were at odds with the Sadducees; that wise Gamaliel was a Pharisee (Acts 5:34); that many of the brethren remained Pharisees, even though they had to grow and learn that Gentiles didn’t have to first become Jews and then become Christians (Acts 15:5); and that Nicodemus who originally met Jesus by night, later went with Joseph of Arimathea, in broad daylight, to give Jesus a proper Jewish burial with spices (John 3:1,19:39-42), was a Pharisee! Not every Pharisee was evil or rejected Christ! In conclusion: the issue isn’t whether the Jewish group whom GOD has ordained to preserve the Bible and determine and proclaim the Sabbath and holy days are without sin (Leviticus 23:2), but whether or not we accept the biblical record that God has only authorized the Pharisees to chair “Moses’ seat” and judge with his authority. Those who would attempt to usurp their God-given position would do well to remember Gamaliel’s advice about fighting against God! God has clearly given certain responsibilities to His Jewish servants to fulfill and that’s what they’ll continue to do until the King of the Jews reigns in Jerusalem with these honors! By Craig Ballantyne What is necessary for safe weight loss? A calorie deficit must be created through exercise and a small calorie reduction. This means more energy goes out than comes in. If it were only so simple! Problem #1 Appetite seems to increase with activity level (therefore cancels out energy expended), this may not always happen. Problem #2 The body will attempt to conserve weight during times of increased activity and reduced calorie intake (body becomes more efficient with energy). Problem #3 Scales do not tell how much of the body weight is muscle, fat, OR water. Problem #4 We all know someone who eats a lot (and eats a lot of “forbidden foods”) BUT does not seem to gain a pound, while others eat very little and still have difficulty in altering their body composition. Tip #1 You must use weight training to build muscle mass and increase metabolism and you must exercise consistently. The energy expenditure will help develop a negative caloric balance. Tip #2 Base your success on how you feel, how your clothes fit, and how well you perform in your sport/activity, NOT on how the scale reads. Tip #3 Do not starve yourself. The body may shut down its metabolism and it becomes extremely efficient in saving/storing energy. Eat nutritious meals spaced evenly throughout the day to maintain the metabolism and provide energy for exercise. Reduce any unnecessary food intake. Tip #4 Remember you are trying to eat fewer calories then are needed to maintain weight. Aim to reduce the calories by a maximum of 20% (i.e. 200-400 per day), BUT/ never go lower than 1500 total daily calories. Reducing the amount of fat in your diet greatly helps in reaching a calorie deficit (because each gram of fat has 9 calories). Tip #5 Do NOT eat “fat-free” foods in excess. Remember the aim is a calorie deficit! There are no magic OR forbidden foods. Some are better than others BUT very few items need to be fully excluded from a diet. Allow yourself at least the occasional treat. Tip #6 Choose water as your low-calorie fluid source, unless you need the nutrients that are provided by a glass of milk OR juice. Be honest #1 Do you really need to lose weight? Losing weight often involves certain sacrifices, so determine if it is really necessary for health or performance and then make full commitment to the goal. Be honest #2 Can you decrease your food intake without your health suffering? Try to reduce calories with your health in mind by reducing the foods with least nutritional value (i.e. processed foods, sugary drinks, excess sauces, and sugar). Be honest #3 Are you truly hungry when you eat? Are you just thirsty, bored, stressed? Be honest #4 Are you active for only 30minutes (your exercise session) and then stuck in a chair for the rest of the day? Consider this before you justify an increase in caloric intake. Since depression affects millions of people each year, chances are you may know someone who suffers from this terrible illness. Helping someone with severe depression can be frustrating at times. Many depressed people don’t want to be helped. It’s as if they feel they can benefit from being depressed because no one expects anything from them. Some even go as far as to feel that being depressed is easier than dealing with life’s problems and trying to improve them. It’s important to realize however, that not ALL people who suffer from Depression feel this way. Many people suffer from depression needlessly all because they won’t consult with a Doctor. If you know someone like this it’s important that you do what you can to convince them to seek professional care. Let them know that you care and just want to make sure that they are okay. Sometimes if the person won’t take the initiative, you may have to make the appointment for them and make sure they get there. Be kind but at the same time, be firm. Helping a friend or relative who suffers from Depression is no easy task, but it can be lifesaving. At times, just knowing you care makes all the difference in the world. Many people who suffer from Depression feel like they are a burden not only to their family and friends, but also to themselves because they feel as if they are helpless and can’t get past their depression. Some even feel ashamed and humiliated. So, instead of getting help, they isolate themselves some more and in turn drift further and further away. In order to help a person who suffers from Depression, you first need to have empathy for that person. In other words, try to identify emotionally with them. Be sensitive to their feelings and realize that they really are in emotional pain. What they are feeling is real so try to be understanding. NEVER ever tell a depressed person to ’snap out of it.’ This simply cannot be done. Other ways to help a depressed person may be to encourage them to talk. You never want them to keep everything bottled up inside them. Avoid judgemental and critical critical comments. Remember, most depression sufferers have very low self-esteem, so try to restore it by reasoning with them. Ask them why they feel the way they do and really LISTEN when they talk. By showing them this attention you are showing them that you have a genuine interest in wanting to help. If you are married to someone who suffers from Depression don’t automatically assume that you are the cause of the depression. Depression isn’t ALWAYS caused by a bad marriage. However, it can be brought on by friction, guilt or a strained or isolated relationship. Always remember that if you are married to someone who suffers from depression and they lash out at you, don’t take it personal. Remember the emotional pain they are in. Also remember that in most cases, YOU are not the one they’re mad at. Remembering this can help you respond to them in a mild way. If it’s your wife that suffers from depression, take the initiative by helping cook and clean. If there are kids in the family, help by tending to them instead of your wife having to do it. By doing this you are helping in more ways than you know. So, if you know someone who suffers from Depression, always be patient, show empathy and assist them in any way you can. Be encouraging and let them know you are thinking about them and you care. Send them a letter or card in the mail. Give them a call on the phone, or better yet, pay them a visit, even if it’s for a little while. All these little things can mean the world to a person who is depressed. Don’t expect someone with depression to get well overnight. It can be a slow process at times. So the best thing to do is to try to prevent it. If you suffer from Depression and want to prevent or fight it, start by getting plenty of exercise, get proper rest and eat a well balanced diet with plenty of fruits and vegetables. Avoid the ‘depressing foods’ like chocolate, caffeine or other sugars. Don’t build your sense of worth on the love of others, on money, power or your job. Avoid drugs and too much alcohol. Always do the best you can but don’t try to be perfect. There is no such thing. And the number one thing you have to remember is to recognize the early symptoms of depression and seek help immediately. A Garden To Draw Hummingbirds

By James Ellison Hummingbirds have an unusual capability to hover in one place by quickly flapping their small wings which may genuinely have made them the fairies that a lot of people saw hovering around brilliantly colored flowers. Its not hard to make a garden that will lure hummingbirds, but if youd like to build a home in which they will gladly nest and live all the way through the northern summer, you want to provide them with more than a sugar water feeder and a plant or two. An active hummingbird garden doesnt have to be huge, but it will have all of the following major ingredients to draw in and keep the little fairies. Select plants that bear flowers many times through the spring, summer and autumn.Flowers are the major ingredient in getting hummingbirds to your garden. The small birds feed on nectar that is made by flowers, and appear particularly attracted to plants with trumpet or tubular bright red and orange flowers. Some of their particular favorites are rose of sharon bushes, rhododendrons and azaleas, so the red trumpet isnt a hard and fast rule. For northern gardens that beckon the ruby-throated hummingbird, select from the list of plants below, be sure that you select plants that bloom at different times during the flowering season to furnish food for them during spring, summer and fall. Spring Bloomers Azaleas, rhododendrons and rose of sharon bushes make a great setting for hummingbird gardens. They flower early in the spring and keep on blooming through the early summer. Pink and bright red varieties are preferred, but hummingbirds love all rose of sharon types. Summer Bloomers Bleeding hearts and red mountain columbine flower in the early summer, also salvias, petunias, trumpet honeysuckle, morning glories, trumpet vines and impatiens, all of which catch hummingbirds. A wide scope of shade patterned impatiens is an effective attraction for hummingbirds, who hunt by sight. Autumn Bloomers Butterfly bush, garden phlox, day lilies, bee-balm and impatiens all will keep hummingbirds returning through the autumn and entice late migrators. Have a source of water in the hummingbird garden. Unlike bigger birds, hummingbirds will rarely take advantage of a bird bath or bowl of water. Instead, they enjoy cool mists. A garden hose with a misting fixture or a small fountain that can be adapted to a fine mist will keep them coming back. Vertical space for hummingbirds to perch and nest. Hummingbirds require shelter from predators and tiny branches for perching and resting. By selecting a couple taller bushes or trees, you can offer both. A few feeders will provide a treat in your hummingbird garden. There are scores of commercially designed hummingbird feeders built to be attractive to the little roamers. Pick feeders with bright red accents to get their attention, and a feeder that holds about 8 ounces of sugar water. Instead of using one big feeder, place 2 to 4 of them around your yard, out of sight of each other if possible. Hummingbirds are notoriously territorial. By offering several private feeding stations, you will increase the amount of hummingbirds that you attract. They are another reason to go organic because they need not come in contact with chemical pesticides or herbicides that many spray around their flowers and vines. Help them survive.
